Decadence de Barbette is playful yet sophisticated indulgence, bursting with Lemon, creamy White Cake Batter, and light Cardamom at the beginning, then giving way to sweet, luscious notes of Strawberry Ice Cream and Sparkling Champagne. The finale is a sweet yet rich, grounding base of Vetiver, Patchouli, and smooth Sandalwood. A celebration of decadence and charm in every spritz.Barbette, born Vander Clyde Broadway in Texas in 1897, gained international fame as a trapeze artist, high-wire performer, and female impersonator. Early in his career, he teamed up with female trapeze artist Miss Alferetta, stepping into the role of her twin sister after the sister’s tragic death. Recognizing that female acts drew larger audiences, Miss Alferetta insisted that Barbette perform in drag. Barbette later went on to perform solo, dressing as a woman while performing his daring high-wire stunts, only to reveal his true gender at the end by removing his wig. In the mid-1920s, he moved to Europe and quickly achieved fame in Paris. His artistry and persona captivated the city, earning admiration from his friend Jean Cocteau, who wrote a celebrated essay about him. During this time, Barbette posed for a striking series of photographs by Man Ray and appeared in the Cocteau-Luis Buñuel film Le Sang d'un Poète. In the 1930s, Barbette returned to the United States but suffered a serious fall during a performance that led to injuries, forcing his retirement from the circus in 1938.To learn more about Barbette and his facinating life, visit: http://www.circopedia.org/BarbetteArt: Barbette by Charles Gesmar (1926).
