Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she rose from poverty to become one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century. Baker gained fame in the 1920s after moving to Paris, where her exotic and provocative performances, including her famous "banana skirt" dance made her famous. During World War II, Baker worked as a spy for the French Resistance, using her celebrity status to gather intelligence. Later, she became a staunch advocate for civil rights, speaking at the 1963 March on Washington alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Baker adopted 12 children from around the world, calling them her "Rainbow Tribe," to promote unity and diversity.
