The Shine of the Shallows by Sucreabeille

The Shine of the Shallows

By: Sucreabeille

General Notes

  • ambers

Description Scent Notes: Sea spray, water, lotus, ozone, moss, cumin, ambers Interviewer: What's it like living in a lighthouse? Lighthouse Keeper: I've been a lighthouse keeper for goin' on 13 years now, and the one thing I can tell yea is, it's wet out here. Interviewer: Ah yes, the sea is like that. Lighthouse Keeper: No laddie. You're mistaken, and I don't blame yea. It's the women. Interviewer: The women? Lighthouse Keeper: The women. [The interviewer looked around, through the windows of the lighthouse, he could see the vast horizon, the salty spray on the rocks and the coast stretching out on either side.] Interviewer: Are there a lot of women around here? Lighthouse Keeper: Laddie, have yea ever heard of a mermaid? Some call them sirens. They sit out on those rocks over there and holler all night long. Singin' they call it. A bunch of goose honking if you ask me. I've tried to reason with those ladies, but they just hiss at me and tell me they're huntin' for the contents of the sailors' trousers. [They lean in] And I don't mean the pockets. Interviewer: Ah, I see. Does this happen every night? Lighthouse Keeper: Naw, just when there's a ship around. They follow the ships yea know, sing to them and try to get sleepy men to jump over. It's a whole frenzy when they get a little too close to shore on a stormy night, and I do my best up here to save the sorry blokes, but they do still crash on the rocks from time to time and the mermaids, well... let's just say they know what they want and how to get it. Interviewer: Do they ever... sing for you? Lighthouse Keeper: Ha! They try laddie, they try. But my heart belongs to the Sea Hag, and when I hear those mermaids hollerin' it's all I can do not to throw rocks down at them for disturbin' my peace. Interviewer: Who is the Sea Hag? Lighthouse Keeper: Well, laddie, that's a story for a different time. Come back tomorrow and I'll tell yea.
